The Coat of Arms of Ecuador, adopted in 1830, is a heraldic symbol that represents the nation’s history and values. The design features an escutcheon divided into four quarters, symbolizing the four sections of the country. The first quarter showcases a gold-colored sun with rays extending to all four sides, symbolizing the equatorial location of Ecuador. The second quarter displays a white field with three blue-bordered red discs arranged in an asymmetrical pattern, representing the three volcanoes of Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, and Tungurahua. The third quarter represents the sea with a five-masted naval baroque ship sailing on wavy waters, symbolizing the maritime importance of Ecuador. The fourth quarter shows an Andean condor perched above two crossed spears and a quipu, representing power and wisdom, as well as the indigenous heritage of the nation. Above the shield is a royal crown with five visible arches, symbolizing the five provinces that existed during the time of its adoption. The motto “Una sola patria” (One Homeland) is inscribed on a scroll beneath the shield. This coat of arms has undergone minor changes over time but has remained essentially the same since its adoption in 1830, embodying the spirit and identity of Ecuador.
