The Coat of Arms of Guatemala is the national symbol representing the Central American nation. Adopted on July 25, 1871, it features a shield divided into five parts. The top left section represents Quetzaltenango, with three volcanoes: Tajumulco, Santa Maria, and Agua. The top right part showcases Escuintla and Sacatepquez, symbolized by a coffee plant with three ripe beans. The bottom left section depicts Huehuetenango and Solol, represented by a cotton boll. The bottom right section represents Suchitepquez and Chimaltenango, represented by a corn stalk with an ear of corn. In the center is a shield divided into three parts:1) A green field representing Guatemala’s forests and mountains,2) White waves symbolizing the Pacific Ocean coastline, and3) Azure background for Lake Atitln and the Caribbean Sea.Overlaid on this central shield is a quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala, holding an olive branch in its beak – symbolizing peace. Beneath the shield rests a scroll inscribed with the motto “Libre, Soberano e Independiente de la Corona de Castilla y Len” (“Free, Sovereign and Independent of the Crown of Castile and Leon”). The colors red and white, taken from the flag of Spain, are used extensively throughout the design.
