The “Fly Fishing” merit badge for Boy Scouts is a skill-based award that focuses on teaching scouts about the art and technique of fly fishing. This merit badge involves learning about the equipment used, knots, casting techniques, fly selection, fish identification, catch and release methods, ethical angling practices, and conservation efforts related to fishing. The scout also needs to demonstrate their understanding by successfully completing a series of requirements, which may include building a fly rod, catching and releasing fish using fly-fishing tackle, and teaching others about safe fishing practices. This merit badge not only encourages appreciation for nature but also promotes patience, perseverance, and a sense of responsibility towards the environment.
